A Photojournal of the Apple "Naked Cube" modification which I invented. This became a popular modification, in one form or another. Gnarlodious-Cube is now a home server running several websites.

The Apple Cube was found with a superfluous, boring and weighty steel shell which this owner removed.

Initial concern was that the shell served as an RF block, but no such interference has been observed since the mod. In fact, the Cube is astonishingly "RF clean".

The memory slots and video card. Convective cooling in this area is greatly enhanced without the steel shell.

The Apple Cube seems to appreciate the increased airflow without the louvers and screen.

Plus if something does fall in there it is a lot easier to get out.

"Bump On" clear rubber stickies are applied to the metal for spacing and positioning.

Clearance here is 1 millimeter to prevent bugs (literally) from staging unauthorized nighttime incursions and activating the capacitive switch.

I removed the toggle symbol for even more risque nudity.

Now ain't that a beautiful sight.

Two of the 3/8ths stainless steel rods support the cage and keep it tight. They are removed with any primitive tool (e.g, chopstick).

Airport field strength seems significantly higher without the steel shell but I lack the measuring tool to quantify the difference.

These photos show the handle extended but it can be retracted. It makes a good "travel handle".

Night.jpg

A slow shutter night shot shows the lights now visible in the rear. The yellow one on the left indicates "power on" and red on right is "computer on". There is a green light for "disk read/write" but I did not get it on film (er, CCD).

This is why I like the Cube reverse (back showing), as well as more connector access.
