Let's call it the Feud Channel

I see a local magazine with a full-page ad for a "Chef Knockout" event, featuring a grimacing chef wielding a rolling pin for a club. It makes me wonder what has happened to the ancient art of cooking, which up until now was considered feminine, nurturant and artistic. But now that men have put on the chef's hat, it seems like competition and prizes are what's it's all about.

Watching the Food Channel recently is even more revealing of the masculine ego. Samurai cooking contests, Guinness world records, huge giant gargantuan cookouts and celebrity smackdowns are all you see. Even the women who participate seem to have lost all sense of femininity, as though they were made to compete with males.

And what they are cooking is positively revolting. Greasy, sugary starchy overcooked meals all revolving around meat. That is why they all start out thin and healthy but after a few years are expanding out of bounds. Even the desserts they make are despicable, unless you like edible sculpture and cake decorating tournaments.

So I suppose it's to be expected that the Food Channel's advertisers are some of the most abusive corporations in America. Giant agribusinesses that are known polluters. Exploiters of poor third world nations. Producers of unhealthy food who hide behind "Freedom" and corporate rights.

I just wish there was a more gentle mothering sort of Food Channel. Television dedicated to nourishment, economy, education and reverence for the life giving Earth. Somehow they have taken blessed food and turned it into a slow death. But that's freedom for you.
